ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY | Spring 2025
These three projects were developed during an Experimental Typography course which emphasized a self-managed course structure. I served as both the project manager and the designer, responsible from concept development to research to timeline management. Each project had to exist in one of three mediums – digital, 2D, and 3D – while maintaining a heavy focus in typography. Within those parameters, I had creative freedom in determining the project content and format.
I chose mediums that aligned with my personal interests: animation for the digital project, embroidery for the 2D project, and pop-up design of the 3D project. The unifying concept for all three projects was the creation and application of a set of letterforms which were created by deconstructing the typeface Temeraire. The creation of these letterforms centered on the idea of resilience, exploring the balance of strength and fragility that creates resilience. I achieved this by using contrasting elements – frail lines with bold shapes.
For the digital project, I used After Effects to animate the letterforms, experimenting with techniques that emphasize their underlying concept. My 2D embroidery project applied various embroidery techniques to construct my letterforms in the form of a tapestry, using a quote to emphasize the concept of the letterforms. For my 3D project, I created a 6×6-inch pop-up book featuring the same quote and letterforms, focusing my exploration on typography in dimensional space.
I also created three packets that described my process and documented my progress for each project. These included written reflections, research, photo documentation, and developments. Each packet focused on my ideas, my research, my responses to challenges, and the steps I took to complete each project.
