Experimental Type

ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY  |  Spring 2025

These three projects were developed during an Experimental Typography course structured around self-directed, interdisciplinary work. As both project manager and designer, I was responsible for every stage—from concept development and research to timeline management and execution. Each project explored a different medium—digital, 2D, and 3D—while maintaining a strong emphasis on typographic exploration. Within those parameters, I had full creative freedom over content and format.

I chose mediums that aligned with my personal interests: animation for the digital project, embroidery for the 2D project, and pop-up design for the 3D project. A unifying concept across all three was the creation and application of custom letterforms. These were built by deconstructing the typeface Temeraire into a system of thin lines and bold shapes. The design was grounded in the concept of resilience, exploring the tension between fragility and strength—which together build resilience. I expressed this through visual contrasts: delicate lines paired with bold forms and color palettes that reinforced this duality.

For the digital piece, I used After Effects to animate the letterforms, experimenting with motion techniques that emphasized their construction and conceptual meaning. In the 2D project, I applied various embroidery techniques to build the letterforms as part of a tapestry, using the quote “Your fragility is also your strength” to highlight the theme. The 3D project took the form of a 6×6-inch pop-up book featuring the same quote and letterforms, focusing on the interaction of type with its surrounding space.

Since the projects were self-directed, I also developed three process documentation packets over the semester. These included written reflections, research findings, in-progress photography, and breakdowns of my design decisions and problem-solving approaches for each project.
